According to the Pew Research Center, beginning in 2011 and for the next 19 years or until 2030, about 10,000 boomers will turn 65 every day. This is the largest and fastest growing population cohort in America. W is a microcosm of this aging trend. Boomers represent a large and ever-growing segment of the church family. Demographic trends in America and at W show that these boomers:
Control a large amount of the country’s wealth;
Increasingly have life expectancies of 90 and even 100 years of age;
Are part of the growing grandparenting population; and
Continue to be valuable contributors in the workplace, non-profit volunteers, and politically active.
W fully recognizes the importance and contributions of the boomer generation to the history of the church. The well-known adage is true that ‘the best is yet to come.’ Or as the psalmist said in Psalm 71: 17, 18, “O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds…I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.”
The Baby Boomer Vision
The vision of W is to transform generations, equipping a new generation to be strong, ardent Christ followers. Boomers have a critical role to play in shaping the next generation through Godly legacy and missional zeal. Again, the challenge to boomers in Psalm 145: 4, “One generation shall commend your works to another.” The spiritual well-being of boomers, integral to the health of W, is an important goal. To achieve this goal, W seeks to engage, mobilize and strengthen the legacy community. The legacy ministries is a holistic approach to baby boomer ministries, as shown below:
WHCC Legacy Ministry:
